Intro
After viewing Bylund’s video on intellectual property laws, I couldn’t agree more with his statement about history’s intellectual property laws. Bylund mentioned the invention of the lightbulb and how Thomas Edison was the one credited with the invention of the lightbulb however, there were others around the world in different places different times with the same ideas that were not credited, I can agree this case that there is a strong disconnect between individuals therefore not making it plagiarism. I believe that when there is enough distance between people who invent the same ideas, that it is true they both just had the same thought processes as each other that led to a similar conclusion. However, I begin to disagree with Bylund when he mentions the idea of showing your neighbor a blueprint and them something up with the same idea shortly after as not being plagiarism.
Relation to Architecture
I come from a very competitive major, like most students in the class, where intellectual property laws come into play every day of my life. In design we are tasked with coming up with our “own ideas,” yet, how can we when I am convinced that everything in the world has already been thought of. Stealing ideas, and copying ideas are not the same. For example, if I were to show my peer in the studio a drawing of the model that I made for my project and they showed up the next day with the same model or drawing they would be plagiarizing my work. It is the same as the blueprint example. It is simply not acceptable for your neighbor to see your work and ideas for a new invention then go off and create it and call it their own. I can understand the idea of sharing information and views on a particular topic to help guide inspiration and development however, it has occurred one too many times in my educational career to myself where there have been instances where someone has referenced my work and mirrored it, taking the credit for themselves.
Time to draw the line
Where is the line drawn in relation to plagiarizing someone’s ideas and just taking inspiration? I believe that it is okay to take inspiration from a reference and continue to develop the idea in your personal style however, it gets complicated because simply changing color is not enough to make it not plagiarism. If someone were to view my sketches for a design then design what I have drawn out then is that not plagiarism? I know that I do not own patents for my designs but, it is still my own intellectual property that someone just happened to see without my knowledge.
