A short story and the reality of fiction

in #reflection10 days ago

Today I'm going to share another little cautionary tale I made that had been rattling around in my head for some time. I think I could have polished it more but in the end, I decided to leave it like that. Of course, it's fiction, and originally the message of the story was meant to be communicated with animals, but I guess you have to write about what you know, and I don't know much about animals except dogs and cats. So without further ado, here's the story.

When I practiced football, there was a boy who was very fast and talented and stood out among the others. Every time we played, the team he was on would win. It didn't take long for him to be taken to the first team and play in official games. However, his performance in the first team was not the best, as he was competing with top players who performed better. He played several games there before they finally decided to remove him from the team.

He was as you might say very good playing with bad players, but he wasn't good enough to play with good players.

Again it is fiction but just because it is fiction does not mean it is not real. Sometimes fiction encapsulates thousands of untold true stories in a single made-up story. The fact that it is fiction does not mean that it is devoid of all reality. On the contrary, they can tell a reality that, although not particularly true, is universally relatable. It's like this thought I had:

Muses inspire artists to tell, as fiction, the reality of millions of people.

I've seen a lot of people lately undervalue fiction because it seems to be just entertainment and not practical, but I couldn't disagree more. I am not the biggest reader of fiction, however, I think it is very short-sighted to look down on it and opt only for non-fiction. Not only because it is wrong to say that fiction has no benefits, as I believe it may even have more than non-fiction, but because this utilitarian thinking is not particularly to my liking. I think we should not measure the value of things based solely on the apparent use we can make of them. Sometimes things are simply more than they appear at first glance.

I like fiction and I think that to underestimate it is simply a mistake, and to avoid it is to miss out on a whole world of possibilities, a whole new world as the song says. But I guess everyone has their own tastes, and every opinion is respectable in its way.
