Today I Learned How to Make an Off The Grid Washing Machine!
Today was the monthly wedding anniversary for @mama-pepper and @papa-pepper. Since we celebrate every month, we’ve had 114 anniversaries so far, which translates into 9 1/2 years. In order to bless the wonderful lady, I made her a washing machine.
She had wanted me to make her one for a while now, and since I finally got a 30 gallon barrel the other day, I figured that it was about time that I learned how. I checked out some various YouTube videos on different ones, and once I understood the basic idea, I got to work on my own.
Soon, I will be doing a how-to photo post of the entire process in case anyone else wants to give it a go, and eventually I may even modify it to use a bicycle as the power source.
For now, though, it works and we even washed our first load in it earlier. It was a family affair as the @little-peppers were also very excited about it. For us to be able to wash our clothing without using electricity will be a bonus, and I’ve heard that if you use castile soap to wash with, you can even use the waste water for your garden or plants.
In honor of our anniversary, I’ll give you this video tour of my first homemade washing machine, with all the bells and whistles.

I’m sure that some of you have seen washing machines like this before, but has anyone else ever made their own? If so, are there any ways that you know of to improve on the design of this type of washing machine?
Until next time…
STEEMIT LIKE YOU MEAN IT!
thats funny ;)
Thanks!
Maybe I'll use a similar design to build a rock polisher. Great job Son!
That could work! It would take a lot more turning though.
Maybe a 15 gallon barrell, a bunch of sand, a handful of rocks...
That's pretty cool!
Thanks, did you catch those last two chapters I posted of Love Like His? I've still got a few more to go!
I must say @papa-pepper you truly are a renaissance man.
Thanks @humanearl!
@papa-pepper I passed you some wishes in my Steemit birthday vid! I mentioned ya! Do pass by!!

I'll stop over!
What a creative, @papa-pepper 😁!
Thank you @jumaidafajar!
Good idea. Look forward to see more photos and hear how it is working.
I will keep you posted! LOL
Nice job
What did you use for a door seal ? The one I tried like this leaked too much and I went with a butter churn type instead......oh wait I see now .
Also If you attach fins inside you will get better agitation.
I was considering larger fins or something, and I did not seal the door, I just fill it halfway.
haha this is amazing!
Put a little pepper in there and let it turn baby!
Hmm... it could double as a bath, or i could just wash their clothes... with the @little-peppers still in them!
nice post @papa-pepper
thanks for sharing
I'm glad that you enjoyed it, thank you!
Wow ! This is sooo cool , great job and it does the job saving on power ! Awesome off the grid stuff , i will show my son he loves this stuff ! Thanks for shareing !😉👍💙
I am sooooo glad that you like it! Thanks!
Haha cool !👍
Now the little peppers can wash their own
They had better... LOL!
My grandmother had one that a handle at one end, this was moved backward and forward to rotate the drum. Memory fades as how it was geared, that was 70 years ago.
Still great technology, however it worked!
Impressive! You always have such interesting and practical projects going on. It's fun to tag along.
I've got a lot going on to be sure, which is good for content!
If I made my wife a washing machine she would a) Castrate me and b) stuff the results of said castration down my throat! Thanks for the post but I'll give this one a miss I think.
Mine really wanted one and mentioned it often. Just listen and she'll tell you what she wants. LOL!
The DIY part is so relieving. Really, waw, that's super cool! I would not be able to invest enough time to do that.
Thank you @lemouth!
like i said.. i need you on my zombie team lol!
You're on it!
That is just awesome.
Kudo's for thinking of reusing the water, it does not look all that dry where you are, but you never know, you could experience a drought.
In Cape Town, where I used to live, they are in the midst of a drought, serious water restrictions, dams near empty. So few people realise how valuable water really is!
Connecting a bicycle would make the washing part a bit less laborious!
Thanks so much! We will see about that bicycle!
Nice invention.
Thank you, glad I finally learned how to make one!
Great stuff! I love this kind of thing :D
Us too, thanks man!
Loving your posts @papa-pepper.
This one is fantastic.
A little bit of extra effort, like that, by us all is going to save the planet.
I don't think I can persuade Mrs Hammaraxx to give up her flash electric one for one of those though.
Not just yet.
Just don't pay the electricity bill... she'll be convinced in no time!
Great idea. ha ha ha!
I can see a downside though...
I need the electricity too.
I want one! so awesome!!!
I could make one and bring it down sometime!
(Or make @ballinconscious do it!)
I think I'll post the step by step photo post tomorrow.
Nice design! I think I'll make one, then use a belt to drive it with an exercise bike, powered by kids.
I was thinking that myself!
So awesome! Wish I had DIY skills like that. Nice work man! You should try selling one for steem!
Good idea!
Yeah I've only seen that as a composting bin, but I suppose it can work as a washing machine, good on you for caring and being such a family man :)
I will be making a composter next!
:) should be easy, tell me if you go traveling, or if you release the plans for those, I've watched some videos but I think a simple blog post would do far more, it's easier to understand when you read at your own speed :) and there are pictures :)
btw check this out :) https://www.are.na/explore/blocks have fun with it :)
Here is the photo howto for the washer. https://steemit.com/howto/@papa-pepper/how-to-make-an-off-the-grid-washing-machine-a-simple-step-by-step-photo-post
Imight make that composter today!
That's LOVE
Thanks! I agree~
I saw your 55s, and I had a lot too. Just took me a bit to get that 30, at $10.
You're welcome!
