"But Jesus kept silence." Matthew 26.63

The high priests and elders sought a false witness against Jesus. But He answered them nothing. When believers are together they often return home depressed, for: "In much speech there is no trespass." God also takes the sin of the tongue seriously, and not only "futile conversation" but also "pious" slander. How merciless is your tongue! Entire churches are destroyed in this way and hearts are torn apart. But God hears what we say. One of the most dismal results of the slander is that God no longer listens to our prayers. It will also be true for us: "But Jesus kept silence." The diligent study of the Bible places our hand over our mouths and protects us from hurting other children of God and anointed of the Lord. "But Jesus kept silence." This silence angered Caiaphas and frightened Pilate greatly. Thus the silence of Jesus became a powerful answer to Pilate's question. Maybe you talk a lot to God without receiving a response. Why does He not respond? Is it not because He is silent until you take some action? Perhaps you pray like this: "Lord, take away the sin of me." Is this right? No, for it is you who must forsake sin! Say a total not to all that is sin. Then in your feeble heart will the joy of victory break forth!
