The abstract concept of faith became a reality for me when I was about nine years old. Reverend Williams described faith in a way that I have not heard any better during the last fifty years. I can see him standing there in the pulpit declaring: "Faith requires that you hear God's voice and decognize it. If you hear God telling you to run and jump through that wall (he turned to his left and pointed to the wall on the left side of the pulpit as he faced the congregation), You part is to run and jump. It is God's part to get you through the wall."
That simple explanation of faith continues to inform me when I find myself confronted with any obstacles. Whether facing walls of debt, walls of illness, walls of pride, walls of seemingly impossible circumstances, the best time for a leap of faith is when the walls seem most impenetrable. Taking the leap when there is no logical way out is faith in action. Taking the leap against impossible odds is faith declaring that with God all things are possible. Taking the leap when every thing looks hopeless is a demonstration of life altering faith. We have to take the leap not knowing if or when God will open the way. We are called and challenged to take the leap, believing that God is able to open the way.
Faith is the courage and confidence to trust God, love, grace and, mercy. Faith allows us to give the situation up...not in hopeless resignation' but hope filled surrender of control of the outcome. Our part is to take the leap and leave the outcome to God. We are charged only with doing our part. God must do the rest.
Go ahead. Make the leap. You are in God's hands.
