Horatio Spafford, a lawyer who lived in Chicago, wrote this hymn. In 1870, his son died from scarlet fever. A few months later he lost his entire investment and savings in the Great Chicago Fire.
Two years later he sent Anna, his wife, and their four girls ahead of him to Europe. Another ship hit theirs and it sunk. Anna cabled, “Saved alone, what shall I do?”
While passing near the place of his daughters’ death, Spafford was inspired to write the words to the hymn, “It Is Well With My Soul.”
The lyrics of Spafford’s hymn reveal his attitude towards his enormous trials, and his determination to stay strong in spite of his circumstances.
May God by His Spirit empower the many believers in Christ around the world who are being persecuted for their faith to stay strong in spite of their circumstances as well.
