Who do you want to be? The one who gives or who receives?
Since we were little we have heard the famous phrase "It is better to give than to receive" we have read it in self-help books, in the Bible and everyone repeats it like parrots, but in the end human logic does not finish understanding this phrase, rather say, this beginning.
We are designed to receive, we like gifts, we like easy money, we like the offers and more than one, the eyes enlarge when they’re reading the word FREE, but when it comes to "Give" the thing is not so fun. We are so busy in the search for success, looking for credits, opportunities, government aid and we are so attached to money and our possessions that we forget that famous phrase "It is better to give than to receive", and it is not just about giving money, giving covers many things: Give love, give appreciation, give advice, give support, be grateful.
The origin of this famous phrase is in the Bible
"It is more blessed to give than to receive." Acts 20:35
Logic makes us believe that if we give what we have, we impoverish, but I invite you to see it from another point of view. First of all we must understand that the one who has the right to receive, is the one who does not have to buy, I mean the poor, who is not doing very well in life or who has a health problem. If you want to live receiving, your heart is telling you that you must live as a needy person to receive. And who is the one who gives? That person who HAS something to give or simply has to spare, that person who is big of heart, and above all his faith that God will continue to blessing him.
It is very common for celebrities and billionaires to donate millions of dollars to foundations, orphanages, nursing homes and hospitals. Have you ever heard that one of them has been impoverished by making such a large donation? Surely not! On the contrary, every day they are more prosperous and every day they make more donations.
Surely you will be thinking, of course they have plenty of money! I do not have money or anything to give! but I'm sorry to tell you that you're wrong, we all have something to give, even if it's some old clothes that you can not be sure, that for someone else who does not have money to buy clothes, would be a good gift. For example, in my house, the shirts were eternal. My older brother used them until they were so small that if he raised his hands his navel could be seen! Then it was my turn to use them until they did not fit, so then they were used to shake the dust and when they did not give anymore they were used to mop the floor. It usually happens in most Latin American homes. But I assure you that you would feel more satisfaction giving it to someone who needs it than using it as a mop.
How many people want to receive food, water and clothes? and If your answer is that you want to be one of them, then you should have been the victim of an earthquake or a tsunami, and if you survive, you would be receiving all these things. I ask you again, who do you want to be? Who gives or who receives?
Two years ago my mother was diagnosed with cancer, it was a very hard time for my family, as we all know the health system in Venezuela does not work well and the high cost of the medicines that my mother needed had us worried and desperate, but thanks God, he opened doors for us and also touched the hearts of some people who gave us financial help for the medicine. I had to be on the side of "receiving" and although I was the one who was receiving the help, the money and the medicines, I had my mother sick and we were going through a bad time. What I want to tell you with this, is that in life we will have many moments in which we have to "Receive" Receive help, money, advice, but you should not stay on that side, when you get up it will be your turn to give and help to the neighbor.
"You can make more friends in two months by getting interested in other people, than in two years trying to get other people interested in you." Dale Carnegie.
Then who receives is not blessed? The truth is that both are blessed because the word says "more blessed is; giving to receive" means that both are blessed, only that giving is more so.
-----Finally, I ask you again: Who do you want to be? The one who Gives or the one who Receives?
“Who gives to the poor will not have poverty; but who turns his eyes away will have many curses." Proverbs 28:27
