Atheism Vs Anti-theism: What's the Difference?

in #religion7 years ago

I want to discuss the difference between atheism and antitheism. There are people who just assume that the two things go hand in hand with each other but they do not. Atheism is simply the lack of belief in deities. Atheism doesn't require activism or outspokenness. Now there are outspoken atheists but that doesn't automatically make them anti-theists. Anti-theism is defined as an active opposition to all theism (including the moderate theists). Most atheists take issue with fundamentalists and radicals but not the moderates of a religion. I take issue with all theistic views which makes me an anti-theist. I think moderates are just as detrimental to society if not more so because they are often ignored and left to their own devices. They are the ones defending the hideous belief systems that allow fundamentalists to exist. The moderates of a religion create this bubble of protection around those that share their beliefs or simply throw out the no true Scotsman fallacy when faced with reality. There are so many theists who are ignorant about what they believe in and when faced with the reality of their ancient book will often rethink their position or turn to apologetics. I may engage with a moderate differently than a radical fundamentalist but I go into every discussion with the same harsh scrutiny. Someone who is moderate doesn't deserve to be treated with kid gloves simply because they conveniently ignore the parts of their religion that they find oh-so abhorrent.
