Technology Is Making Us Depressed

The explicit goal of science is to try to better understand the natural world. The more that we understand about the natural world will lead us to leading better and more comfortable lives, according to science. I agree with this postulation, but here is an alternative way to view scientific progress and the technological advancements it brings forth to ‘help’ humanity.

Science leads us away from God. (I am defining God as a force of good that is found in all of us who genuinely want to lead a fulfilling life.) Here is why New technology brings us away from God. It’s goal is to mesmerize us and make us crave superficial materialistic ideas. We are always seeking the next great tech thing and we don’t stop to appreciate everything that we have. We are in such a race to try to better our technology that we forget what’s most important, to appreciate the things that we have and be grateful for the simple joys of life. This is a major contributing factor to the massive increase in depression. (I hope I do not come across as a luddite, because I use and appreciate modern technology)

Said differently: we are rushing towards a beautiful VR experience when our reality is much more beautiful than any artificial construct could ever be.

Hello! :D
Very interesting topic, but i have a few questions for you!

You semse to only recognise the bad part of technologie and how it affects us in a materailistic way. But there are many great advances for humans in technology, but if i compare what i was told about the medival-ages (with less technology) and how brutal live was compared to now (if you have luck with your birthregion like i did), so basicly:

When does technology stop beeing good for u? Or if you dissmiss all technology you really want to life in a cave again?

Whould you say every advancement is bad? (Topic VR)
How about surgeons that could train with Highly realistic VR?

Ofcourse i respect your way of thinking, but i try to show you some other perspective.

Anyway have a great day!

Thanks for the response. I’m a huge fan of technology. The fact that I’m on Steemit proves this. I know that technology saves lives and makes billions of lives better. I would never want to go back to living in caves.

Some of the wisest and happiest people that I know realize that materialism (fueled by an almost religious lust for new technology) is the root of selfishness and greed.

Some times I think that in the days before vr, before tv, before radio etc... people talked more and spent more time together as a family. I think that technology is leading us away from human contact, and there is grave danger in that.

"people talked more and spent more time together as a family."

I think thats very true, but in my opinion its not the tecnology but how we as a society get affected by it, technology should not end up improving, but we should learn how to handle it better. anyway thanks for the reply!
