There is no contradiction between science and religion if we accept one crucial condition - metaphorical interpretation of religious scriptures. Some of the Church fathers employed metaphorical approach at the very beginning of Christianity. But here we have the case just as in any religion. On the one side (exoteric religion) there are incredible stories taken to be literal truth by the masses and on the other side (esoteric) is the spiritual truth hidden in these stories. This is just the way it has to be since not everyone has the same ability to understand. Exoteric and esoteric religion are complementary. However, science is not compatible with exoteric (literal) interpretation of religion, but it can be in accord with esoteric interpretation. I recommend reading Teilhard de Chardin to all interested in evolution and Christianity.
