It is a common conception that rest is necessary for people. People will often say things such as 'it was good to have some time off', or 'I really needed to relax'. Some people may even say that they need to take a break from work, but I must question whether this statement is true. For instance, when someone says that they 'need' to rest, perhaps this is something that could be conditioned or trained into an efficient means that sticks closer to the body’s actual needs rather than desires or psychological needs.
For example, in the past week I have been working on a project that has required my attention. I have done nothing but work on this for a full seven days. It was only today that I had some time to myself. I can say with absolute confidence that I did not feel any need to rest. I might attribute this down to other driving factors and a sense of urgency. But not everyone is the same and perhaps this isolated case is not indicative of what rest really is. Rest can be divided into sleep, meditation and just general time away from a single fixed task. Taking 'time off', are we really doing nothing at all? Of course not. In fact, the average person will spend their time watching television, or sleeping in late. And very few people would say that this does not count as rest.
So it seems that rest is not so much a physical necessity, but rather an idea that may be more psychological in nature. Perhaps we could think of this as output and activity rate where exertion at capacity can cause fatigue of the mind to set in or simply focus to be lost. This is why ‘smart drugs’ have made a place in the market over the years as the mind is able to focus with much clarity on certain tasks without the need to distract or take rest.
