Today is the one-year anniversary of my husband and I moving from Vancouver to Greenwood (British Columbia, Canada). We went from one of Canada’s largest cities to her smallest with a population of just over 700. Greenwood was a bustling copper & gold mining city with roots in the late 1800’s. When the miners left the town settled into the quiet, peaceful place it is today. We have adjusted to the slow pace, the friendly people and the unlimited outdoor activities. The hardest thing for me to get used to was that the nearest Costco is 2 ½ hours away. For someone like me, who was hitting Costco at least once a week, there was a bit of “lack of shopping” anxiety to conquer. However, what absolutely compensates for the minimal choice of stores is the stunningly beautiful scenery surrounding us. We go on long walks in the hills with our dog every day and we’re constantly amazed about what we see. Every day we seem to find something new, like old abandoned mine roads, old railroad beds and ruins of mining operations or old dilapidated homesteads nestled away in picturesque settings with creeks flowing nearby. Every time we round a bend in the road we discover a different type of wild flower. The profusion of flowers is breathtaking. I’m thankful every day that we left the cement and glass of the big city and came here to the grass and trees of the countryside. I truly believe that nature feeds the soul.
