Long before her massive crossover that conquered every corner of this world, nobody would even believe that a dark-haired and much younger Shakira was really struggling with her musical career. Actually, her first two albums “Magia” (Magic) and “Peligro” (Danger) were huge commercial failures, so her label (Sony, which back then was CBS) was not sure of releasing a new album for her because the executives were afraid of a catastrophic flop.
So back in 1995, Shakira reinvented herself and she decided to leave her teenager, more poppish image that she had shown in her first two eras, and then she became an emerging rock star in Colombia that was ready to conquer the rest of Latin America. She started writing more mature songs that were more rockish than her first songs she wrote, so she recorded a new song called “¿Dónde Estás Corazón?” (literal translation: Where Are You My Love?), it was included on a compilation album titled “Nuestro Rock” (Our Rock).
When “¿Dónde Estás Corazón?” was finally released as the second single from that project, it turned out to be the only hit from that compilation. The song became her breakthrough hit in her native Colombia and Sony Music gave Shakira a third chance to record a new album, and that’s how her massive breakthrough album in Latin America, “Pies Descalzos” (Barefoot), was born…
Shakira filmed a first video that was only broadcasted in Colombia, it was a pretty minimalist video in black and white that featured Shakira dancing with a silver dress.
“¿Dónde Estás Corazón?” promptly captivated so many “hearts” because of its amazingly relatable lyrics, Shakira managed to convey a lot of emotions through her lyrics and her unique voice, this pretty catchy hit song made her a pop rock sensation in Colombia and ended up opening so many doors for her to later become a musical phenomenon in the rest of Latin America.
The song talks about a woman who is desperately looking for the love of her life, she is so much in need of her love, that she tried to find it in “the closet”, in “the alphabet”, under her “car”, on “the radio”, in “the magazines” and even in “the history books”, but then she tells that even though she looked for so long, she’s never able to finally find him.
This single became so successful that Shakira decided to included it on “Pies Descalzos” and was re-released as the second single off that album, which became her first international album and the one that made her a super star in Latin America. “¿Dónde Estás Corazón?” became a huge hit throughout Latin America and a second video was filmed in order to promote the single, the video featured Shakira singing in the rain.
“¿Dónde Estás Corazón?” is a solid pop rock record that served as the perfect introduction to Shakira’s new proposal and style, it fulfilled the mission to revive her career and suddenly all the eyes were on Shakira, the new international super star that was conquering all the hearts in the Hispanic countries with that captivating eccentricism and sincerity behind her thoughtful lyrics that impacted a whole generation back in the 90s.
This hit single was later included on Shakira's first and only Greatest Hits compilation album, which was titled "Grandes Éxitos" and sold more than 2 million albums worldwide. She sang a "¿Dónde Estás Corazón? / Estoy Aquí" Medley on her last world tour "El Dorado", which visited five continents in 54 shows back in 2018. "¿Dónde Estás Corazón?" really was a determinant song for Shakira's musical career and now is part of the big legacy she has built through all these years.
