DARK SOULS PREPARE TO DIE EDITION

I'd like to start of by saying this game does not give a shit about you, it literally wants you to die.

To make things worse the newest version is called "Prepare to Die Edition". In the game you play as a protagonist known as the Chosen Undead, after becoming an undead the player character was imprisoned in the Northern Undead Asylum, which is where the game begins. I mean the game gives you feint clues on the direction you should take in this multi route death trap of a game, but essentially it does not care if you rage quit nor if you smash your controller through your super expensive 4k ultra curved smart OLED TV by taking a wrong turn into a death zone or even not knowing where to go.

(This dude was definitely playing a little Dark Souls)

The company who created this evil bastard of an action-RPG game is From Software a company who clearly doesn't give two shits about statistics, hell, less than 20% of the players who have owned the game have actually completed it due to its sheer difficulty and fuck you attitude. I've come to the conclusion that a small piece of From Software's pitch black heart gains a little light every time somebody completes one of their games.

At its core, Dark Souls is a game about mechanics and timing. You need to keep a close eye on what your enemies are up to, and you need to remember that every button you press commits your character to a full motion. If you begin an attack animation after an enemy starts swinging at you, you'll probably get hit. If you want to take a swig from your health flask, you need to know that your character will take his sweet time, leaving himself vulnerable. And when you get knocked down, your character won't scramble back to his feet; he'll lie there for a second, just tempting bad guys to move in. You need to take each enemy type, dissect their patterns, and figure out what works through trial and error. It might be as simple as blocking, strafing, and attacking when you get the chance. Or, you might need to deflect their blows to stagger them, or somersault away to avoid a powerful blow your shield can't handle, or use a certain type of magic. You're prevented from button-mashing by your stamina meter, which is not particularly generous unless you pour a lot of effort into leveling it up. The upside: When you finally get a hard part right, you feel… well, not good so much, but relieved.

Well put. Honestly, Dark Souls and it's brothers (sequels, bloodborne, etc.) get a bad rap in my opinion. Sure they're difficult, but that's how you learn. Once you got that down, it is SO much fun to play through.
