Review film: Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass

in #review7 years ago (edited)

About several months ago on Facebook, the largest social network in Viet Nam, people started posting statuses or comments starting with the phrase “I see”, for example: “I see a girl passing me”, “I see a cloud in the sky”…. Most people know that this trend began due to the popularity of a movie named “Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass” by Vietnamese-American director Victor Vu.

The film is based on the award winning and best- selling novel “I See Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass” by Nguyen Nhat Anh. The screenplay was written by Viet Linh, based on the original story of famous writer Nguyen Nhat Anh. The movie “ Yellow flowers on the green grass” is Victor Vu's 11th film. Victor Vu is one of Vietnam’s most commercially successful filmmakers, with films such as Vengeful Heart, Battle Of The Brides and Scandal. He is considered one of Vietnam's top filmmakers. The film is produced by Vietnam’s Galaxy Media & Entertainment with the collaboration of the Film Department under Vietnam’s Ministry Of Culture. Galaxy is one of the country’s biggest private studios, encompassing production, distribution and ownership of a nationwide cinema circuit.

The film is set in the mid 1980’s in a poor rural countryside village of central Vietnam. The film follows two young brothers, Thieu (Thinh Vinh) and his younger brother Tuong (Trong Khang) who share and do everything together, but also compete with each other while vying for the attention and affection of a young girl Man (Thanh My) who lives nearby. This leads to a violent climax which leaves Tuong paralyzed and bedridden. In coming to terms with his own conscience, Thieu attempts to redeem himself and discovers the true meaning of brotherhood.

The nostalgic drama reveals the realities of living in Vietnam in that era, before the country’s current economic boom. Material that Victor Vu exploited in the film is the "strength" of the Vietnam countryside. It is immense green fields, substandard housing tile, barren fields and bloated carcases after disasters; the bamboo clump "hold ground". It is rustic country people; protect and help one another during hard times; the feelings of innocent school age or even memories of a difficult time subsidy, the time that the black and white TVs also become a luxury. ..

The camera angles and colors film are gorgeous, such as the first scene flycam and scene slow raindrop fall when thieu hug a toad to run. They are rare scene in Vietnam movies. The music and the lyrics also support the plot. Throughout the film is gentle musics exploited from traditional music material, rustic and close to the viewer. The soft melody of a folk song, the pastoral images in Vietnam appear beautiful and feel majestic.

The film earned $ 3.5 million in revenue, of which $ 1 million was collected after the film was released 1 week. The film won 4 awards the festival's 19 th Vietnam. The film also won the best film award at an international film festival Fuzhou, China 2nd. American Film Market decided to premiere the film in Los Angeles and other US cities.
A film is considered to be a blockbuster with great content, attractive; especially, it captures the hearts of viewers. Technique, sound, light is also a plus for a blockbuster. The film " Yellow flowers on the green grass" again takes you back memories, looking for pieces of childhoods lost somewhere in the subconscious. Because everyone had a childhood like.
