For you guys who don't know, this film tells about the life of British scientist, Alan Turing. He is the inventor of the machine that became the forerunner of the computer. In the movie, Alan Turing played by Benedict Cumberbatch who is none other than Sherlock Holmes cast in the Sherlock series.
Honestly, before watching this movie, I do not know and do not care about the figure of the inventor of this computer. This movie is quite a long time on my hard drive because somehow I always discouraged to watch it.
IMDb rated this movie 8.1, and I agree.
The film is about World War 2, in 1942. At that time the German-led Hitler was at the top of the wind. Almost all European countries are dominated by Nazi. England is one of the few countries that they have not dominated.
However, England's position is challenging. They have food shortages and have to ask for supplies from America. Unfortunately, German forces often attack ships carrying food to Britain. This made the British deploy troops and made an endless war.
The British military, famous for its great history in the past, did not want to give up even though they had trouble because it was often struck by the unexpected attacks of German troops. The reason was that the German forces' command messages were delivered through a complicated code known as Enigma.
The only way to crack the password is to check all the possibilities one by one. The problem is, every single time a message has trillions of possibilities that if checked one by one will take years while every day new messages continue to be sent.
For that reason, the British military formed a special team tasked with deciphering the codes. The team contains smart people. One of its members is Alan Turing.
In fact, they keep using the manual way to check the code one by one. Alan Turing is the only member of the team who insists on creating a code-breaking machine that will break the codes in an instant.
The problem is that Turing's closed and loner personality makes him unpopular with other team members. Moreover, he was then appointed as a team leader by Winston Churchill, the British prime minister. Once he became chairman, he fired two of his members and made a selection to find new team members.
From the selection that got a new team member, a woman named Joan Clark.
Joan's presence slightly changed Turing. Joan manages to make Turing cooperate with other team members. However, that does not make things any better. Turing's machine never came to fruition, while the victims of the German attack continued to fall. The British military threatened to stop the Turing project if in 6 months he failed.
Unexpectedly, Turing gets a solution to solve his engine problems when he meets a girl in a bar who often messes with a German gentleman. The machine finally broke the enigma password.
Solving the codes meant so much to the British. Thanks to the discovery, it is estimated that the war lasted two years faster and 14 million people survived.
Ending the movie goes anticlimactic where Turing is apparently a homosexual and found guilty by the court. (At that time homosexual was a violation of the law in England). Although not arrested but he must accept the punishment of the Hazel that makes his health dropped.
After I search and googling I am even more surprised because it turns out a year after serving his sentence, Turing decided to commit suicide. Tragically, he died not as a hero but a prisoner. Until more than 50 years his status has not changed until 2013, Queen Elizabeth II finally pardoned Alan Turing for his services.
Why I Think that Alan Turing is Less Appreciated
The discovery of Alan Turing not only contributed to saving the lives of many people but also began the discovery of objects that are very influential until now, the computer. Turing makes people believe that a machine that can "think" is something that is not impossible as most people believe at that time.
It is unfortunate that his services have been forgotten for more than 50 years just because he is a homosexual.
Now I just realized why some countries in the world do not consider homosexuality as a violation. In Turing's case, it's very unfair because in addition to the service to the world he never even bothered anyone.
As a person who is less sensitive to this, I always feel uncomfortable every time I hear the word homosexual. However, now I realize they are just human, just as we are worthy of respect.
So through this Movie let us together reduce discrimination against Race or LGBT.
As long as they do not interfere/committing a crime let us respect each other.
Last Quote from me:
I've watched the movie and am very interested with Benedict's charisma in playing Alan Turing. Nice post!
