My Big Sister

in #review2 years ago (edited)

My Big Sister from Stranga Games is a narrative focused and horror themed adventure game where you play as Luzia, a cheeky and courageous pre-teen whose world gets turned upside down when she and her older sister Sombria get uprooted from their ordinary lives. After being kidnapped by a nefarious group with odious and possibly supernatural intentions, now it’s up to her to get them both to safety, and to figure out why of all people, it was happening to them.

As you play My Big Sister, you’ll be exploring a variety of environments, interacting with strange characters, solving simple puzzles, and collecting items to progress in the game and unravel its dark story.

~ To Sum It UP ~

Atmospherically, My Big Sister hit the nail on the head. Although the game wasn’t strictly horror themed in the traditional sense where it didn’t lean on things like excessive gore, or impending terror, though its overall style did lend an air of mystery to the game and I truly appreciated that. That’s not to say it didn’t get grim at times, but it was all balanced nicely with bright colorful graphics and then contrasted with the occasional creepy or gorey scene. The dialogue mirrored that as well, though sometimes the lighter off beat chatter between the characters could miss the mark, resulting in you rolling your eyes instead of warming up to their charm.

From beginning to end the whole finding, collecting, and using various sensical and nonsensical items to solve simple puzzles in order to progress was exactly what I was hoping for, and in turn properly satisfying. I enjoyed poking and prodding around the environments trying to figure out where and when I needed to use said items, even if I could have done without having to open the menu each and every time to do it. A minor grievance that I eventually got over.

My Big Sister wasn’t without its quirks either. Some of which slightly hindered my enjoyment during the moment to moment gameplay, like the game’s collision detection. Sometimes there would be issues navigating around the environments without getting stuck, or there would be an invisible object that would block the path forward. This by itself made exploring more frustrating than it needed to be, especially when interacting with NPCs. Which was finicky at best and only made worse when you had to be oriented just right to trigger their dialogue.

Despite this and the occasional roadblock like not knowing what to do next, My Big Sister ended up being quite satisfying and I look forward to checking out the rest of Stranga Games’ work!
