200 Pound Beauty Korean Film Review

in #reviews5 years ago

My daughter asked to watch this comedic film with me. She's gotten pretty good at choosing films, so I agreed, especially since the last Korean film we watched, Parasite, was really amazing and far deeper than a lot of American films that fill our heads with fantasies, thrills, chills and romantic nonsense.

Kang Hanna (Kim Ah-hoong) is a part-time phone sex agent and the ghost singer for lip-syncing Ammy, whose singing is horrible but she's very pretty and sexy by Korean standards. Without Hanna, Ammy is nothing - she can't even act as evidenced by comments about the TV show Sang-jun (Joo Jin-mo), her boyfriend/director got her into, and has a nasty personality. Ammy is very jealous of Hanna and does things to cause trouble for her, which serve to show how even good-looking people can be very nasty. Sang-jun values Hanna very much because he knows Ammy's career will disappear without Hanna's singing talent (and his own ability to cover up mistakes on-stage). Hanna is in love with Sang-jun but overhears him telling Ammy that she needs to be nice to Hanna because they need her, and that they're just using her.

I don't want to spoil the whole film for you, but Hanna gets head-to-toe plastic-surgery makeover from one of her phone clients, and takes the name "Jenny" in order to replace herself as Ammy's singer and be close to Sang-jun.

The film isn't perfect, but it really does try to provide a glimpse at the lengths that unhappy people will go to in order to change their destiny. People tend not to be kind to those who are very obese, odd or ugly, and this movie gently reminds us of that, while showing us how much the ostracized people suffer. It even mirrors Hanna's misery and obsession by introducing a man who moons over her. There are several messages within this movie, too, that add value to it. The only thing I'm iffy on is the ending - it's almost like it's promoting what Hanna did as good. However, with humor, drama and romance, this film is definitely worth watching.
