Angelina retired from the stage a long time ago. At one point in her life she was a great violinist. But today she is not yet, she is still a great violinist, only some things have changed. When she was still performing and playing in public she became very famous and many people got to know her in various parts of the world. She reached the top. The thing is that once she was at the top of her career she realized something. She liked teaching others to play the violin more than actually dedicating herself to playing it for thousands of people. In other words, she realized that the profession she really liked was being a violin teacher. That is why she left the stage to concentrate better on teaching others. From time to time she gave a concert but those were no longer her priority.
For this and other reasons, she finally decided that she should start working as soon as she could to help others learn to play the violin. It is true that this job would earn her much less than before, but at least she would feel more fulfilled with what she did. Before starting to work where she works today, she went through several schools and universities. In all of them she gave music classes. But finally, she ended up at a community center. There she gave classes to parents as well as to children. She only charged a small monthly fee, so it was very accessible. She only wanted to earn enough to live, not to get rich.
This worked for several years. In all those years she taught many people and some of them are already recognized violinists today. But just when everything was going well, something happened that changed everything she had built. One day a guy came with an envelope in his hand. It was not one of those pretty envelopes that come with invitations, it was a boring green envelope. She opened it while the children continued practicing. The letter was short, but the message was clear. It said that the Mega Construction Corporation had decided that the land where the community center was would be perfect for a luxury parking lot. She thought to herself, Who needs to park their luxury car here? We barely have any cars, she thought as she felt anger begin to boil inside her in various ways.
She just didn't know what to do or how to react to that. Nothing like this had ever happened in her life. She immediately contacted her lawyer to see how they could stop it. The lawyer told her that there wasn't much they could do, because that land belonged to the state and could belong to whoever paid more. She had rented it for years but now someone didn't want to rent it but instead wanted to buy it. The lawyer recommended that the only solution was to raise awareness in the town and put pressure together. Because she would lose through legal means. So he recommended not to take any legal action. For her, the idea of fighting or putting pressure on a giant corporation seemed absurd.
She was a violinist, not a lawyer or an activist. But then she looked at the children. Jorge, with his out-of-tune flute, was now trying to play something, Maria, with her little violin. And it really hurt her, she couldn't give up so easily and close that place she had built with effort. So she decided to fight and raise awareness. She armed herself with her violin and a handmade banner that read “Music doesn’t stop” and went out into the street. Her plan was to play music and attract people’s attention.
Despite all this effort, the result was not impressive. So she began to worry, especially knowing that this was the only way to get her place back, with pressure. But some did begin to notice what she wanted to achieve. It is true that progress was slow, but at least it was something. For example, just that same night when she held her first demonstration, some neighbors came to see her. Manuel the baker brought her a bag of bread and told her not to give up. Then he told her to put her name on the banner. Then Clara, the lady who sold flowers, arrived with a bouquet of daisies to cheer her up. Little by little, the community began to join her cause.
With everyone's help, they organized a concert in front of the community center. Several of the neighborhood's talents came as well, including children she had helped teach in the past. Despite this, the corporation counterattacked with advertisements saying that the parking lot would bring progress to the neighborhood. They even offered Angelina money to drop the cause. But as is more than obvious, she refused, and it was a significant amount. Remember, she doesn't do this work for money, she does it because she loves what she does. So no amount of money will change her mind.
The corporation didn't know that the neighborhood would later unite and join the concert to demand justice. More and more people came from far away. They all wanted to support her because they knew that their interests in the neighborhood were more important than those of the corporation. Thanks to all this fuss, Angelina and her team managed to attract the attention of a major newspaper. The news reached an important journalist who covered the story, increasing public pressure on the corporation. After weeks of tension, Mega Construcciones announced that they were canceling the project.
The corporation was afraid that their reputation would be affected by the press. So they decided to leave the land alone and build the parking lot in this place. It was certainly a great victory for Angelina and her people. But she could not have achieved it alone, it was all thanks to her friends and the citizens. Indirectly this successful result was due to her decision to choose her passion over money. And so she would continue forever.
