According to J. Dlugosz, in the 15th century the celebration of the time of the souls, or spirits, began immediately after the harvest (late September early October); people gathered in wooded groves", each clan lit their own fires, food and drink was offered, and the celebrations, during which offerings were made to the gods and ancestors, lasted until late October. The actual point of Samhain's Velinês, the last day of the month, was, and still is, celebrated by the Balts as a house festival, preceded by a visit to the graves to remember the ancestors. At the graves are laid "little tables for the dead" (Velin statelis) with candles and food. During the actual feast, the table is covered with straw, topped with a clean tablecloth and food and drink placed on top. Before the meal begins the head of the house fills the sacrificial bowl (kaušas, formerly kaukole, a bowl made from a skull) with grain, flour and salt and pours the sacrifice into the hearth to honour "all our dead friends". This is followed by a circular horn of honey or beer and the feast proper, during which an empty plate and bowl may be placed for the particularly revered dead, symbolically filled from all the food eaten. Before the feast, the head of the house addresses the "shadows of the dead, all of them who remember the house" and invites them to attend the feast for the joy of the living and themselves
