Timelapse drawing of a robotic arm to go with a leg. In order to get a fairly original design, I didn't use any references. I started by drawing the hinge/joint locations where I wanted them, then connected those parts with generic shapes, drew the segments/armor bits and then added some details to fill in the large areas.
By starting with the major joint locations and then filling in the parts in-between, you're able to draw complex looking original machinery, robots, spaceships and so on without too much effort.
