- Advances in AI and robotics are paving the way for the addition of robots in our everyday lives.
In this article I will discuss a few robots that are on the market now making fundamental changes in everyday perception about how far we have come as a species technologically.
The robot in the picture above is called 'Aeolus' and was named after the Greek god of the wind. Apparently this bot has many abilities which include fetching you a beer from the fridge, vacuuming, picking up toys and finding your lost glasses. But don't get too excited. Only the super rich will be able to afford this expensive piece of tech considering the price tag will probably be five figures. If you do happen to have the cash laying around you can expect to see it next year.
What about a robot dog to keep you company? I'm talking about the 'Sony Aibo.' This robotic K-9 comes with touch-sensitive panels and can learn to differentiate between family members’ voices. Another valuable use case focuses on the fact that it can also act as a wifi-connected guard dog constantly keeping the score with the camera embedded in its nose. At the moment this puppy is only available in Japan and although affordable for some, the 198,000¥ (£1,300) and 2,980¥ (£20) monthly subscription can put people off.
Need a buddy? How about grabbing yourself a brand new 'Buddy the Robot' from the local shopping mall.
Like a sort of smiley, pancake-faced R2-D2, Buddy is touted as a “companion” that can tutor your children and keep an eye on elderly relatives. Much like the Amazon Echo, it can also suggest recipes, maintain your schedule and announce the weather forecast. Unlike the Echo, it can follow you around on castors, if that’s an attraction.
This buddy clearly has a lot of cool features that can really make quality of life better from the sound of things!
Techblogger Wrap-Up
The world of robotics is always changing. The sheer number of new consumer robots hitting the market in 2018 drops my jaw to the floor. I'm excitedly anticipating interacting with these new robots as I advance in my career as a technology writer. If you are robotics manufacturer and would like a nice review of your product just leave a comment below and I'll follow up shortly!

I really want that puppy! It is so cute. But to be honest, I think I'd take a real dog over a robot. Great tech news..thanks!
Me too. I would prefer a real dog as well.
Idk why but I immediately thought of Westworld with this one. Sure a helpful robot dog would be nice.
Westworld is a very amazing show! I think it may be very close to where humanity is heading if the technologists have their way.
What’s very concerning is the potential for AI (artificial intelligence) to put a steadily increasing number of humans out of work. Amazon has recently talked about their plan to stop using delivery trucks and move to drones for example. Think about that for a moment, Amazon was started in 1994 and a delivery service that has been in business for barely 20 years has already technologically advanced past the point of needing delivery men/women. The biggest problem is that in many countries trucking is one of the number one jobs, in this regard Amazon is basically making delivery boys obsolete similar to how milk is no longer delivered door to door. We may think these conveniences are a great thing now however we also need to be fully aware of the likely possibility that within the next hundred we can see massive amounts of unemployment due to lower level menial jobs being overtaken by machine AI.
Absolutely. I've been following this trend for the past 6 months religiously. There are a lot of concerns that come to mind when it comes to the integration of robotics and AI into society. I hope as a species we are prepared for what's to come and can find a way to create a utopian society as opposed to a dystopian one.
wow so cute :)
I didnt read the article but there was a headline today stating that by 2020 80% of elderly care will be given by robots.
I believe this to be a bit aggressive in forecast but the point remains...we are in a rapidly changing world and robots are going to be a large part of the future. AI is going to radically alter the way society is.
Well... Maybe next time you can read the article you are commenting on to get a better idea of the subject material beyond 'robot' but I understand we are all busy people!
Sorry for the confusion.
I meant I didnt read the article about the Japanese robots taking over the elderly care.
I read your article.
embracing!
That is super funny. I personally would never get a robot friend.
Amazing post
Very nice robot
Good one
I will buy that robot dog. I can't have a real dog cuz I haven't got the time for it. This robot dog is a great solution!
Development is necessary but Machines are becoming alternatives for human beings may cause some problems in future... In my point of view... lol...
