I had no idea that it is fashionable to have a mid life crisis and go running. This makes sense now and women will believe anything. At least guys just have affairs and buy sports cars. Imagine if both were raiding the bank account there would be nothing left.
I find it funny when I hear people going through phases in their life. A common one is the exercise like a lunatic phase. I have known plenty who have fallen into this trap and it is always the ones who aren't sporty.
My brother in law is sporty and is above average fitness, but it is his wife who has never been fat who is going through a mid life crisis maybe. Thank goodness family and friends don't read my stuff as she would probably try and castrate me after reading this.
She has turned to running, but not your average "just going for a quick run"sort of thing. Twice a day and we are talking 15 -20 km each time. I don't know how may pairs of running shoes she is going through currently but she is trying to get the whole family involved.
Last weekend she invited my brother in law to go out for breakfast. She told him to get dressed in running gear and they would go for a quick run before stopping for breakfast. I spoke to him on Monday and he was in pain. A bit stiff is closer to the truth as she dragged him nearly 20 km.
They caught an uber back home afterwards as she knows he won't go to breakfast ever again. What happened to driving somewhere and having a walk along the beach after you have had breakfast.
Another crazy women is my wifes cousin. She isn't very sporty and can't catch a ball. She runs like a duck or used to anyway and now travels around the world doing the city marathons. Last year they (she has a running friend who is also nuts) did the New York marathon and the London marathon and have heard they are going to Tokyo next.
The last thing i want to do these days is put on a pair of running shoes and go running for hours. I don't have the energy and time and the one thing they have in common is they are not career women and are housewives (maybe I should delete that bit). I am not suggesting they are bored or anything, but maybe they are and have too much time on their hands.
I would gladly train for marathon, not due to midlife crisis or to show off but to prove myself that I'm capable of doing it.
Unfortunately my pb is 10k and my body told me that's enough. I have to listen to my body and not work against it.
Doing two trainings a day is not healthy as you're overtraining yourself and it's going to have consequences.
I'm planning to start running again a couple of times a week but first I need to take care of some health issues.
Better than stuffing your face.

I fully agree with you on that.
Never!! I will never take up running, it's the devils sport.
I just don't see the appeal of running in a line for no reason. Team sports, competitions absolutely but it's the same reason i'm not a fan of the gym. I tend to get bored if there isn't a goal or game to win.
My thoughts exactly. I prefer solo sports, but usually there is a challenge to overcome: A wave to catch, or an opponent to disarm.
With running or weightlifting there is nothing to quiet the inner voice that says "why are we doing this, can we stop?"

Exactly but put me on a pitch and i'm dangerous. :D
I would never get into this either. I enjoy doing stuff with other people and that doesn't include running in a group as that is boring.
Thank goodness family and friends don't read my stuff either!
I agree as it could be a problem. If they appear my bunny rabbit picture with the shades and cigarette are coming back pronto.
Hehe, is always good to have an unrecognisable profile pic!
Can I just check that's right -
Twice a day at 15K each time, that's 30K a day, that's 180K a week if she takes a day off?
That can't be right, that's more than pro long distance runners do.
Or did you mean twice a week?
I'm not gonna bash anyone that runs, I love it!
Having said that I think 3-5 runs a week is enough for anyone, and personally I only do one run >10K a week, and the rest are about 4-8Ks.
It's probably one of the cheapest ways of managing a mid life crises
Although there is this growing tendency for people to enter extreme endurance events - like 100K races and iron man triathlons - I feel the pull myself.
I get it, honestly, if you get into a proper training regime it prevents you going out binge drinking, you can eat pretty much whatever you want without gaining weight (even in your late 40s) and it kind of structures your week, and it's quite social too if you enter events. And it's cheap. It ticks lots of boxes.
And if you're not stupid about it it's quite easy to squeeze a few runs a week into a buys schedule.
I have no idea the exact kilometer count right now but she is between 150 and 200 Km per week. The group in the morning do a minimum of 10 Km and then there is another group in the afternoon. On the days there is no group she drags her son along. I would guess it must be around the 150 Km a week. She has the running bug.
That's just insane!

That is what we all think and hopefully her husband wont suffer much more and it is a passing phase.
Maybe it's just best to give it a while and let it burn itself out!

Great write-up. your opinion counts.
My wife also got into running. I fully support it (it gets her out of the house, lol) but more importantly, she also decided to do it with a good cause in mind (raising money for childhood cancer). As long as these things are channelled into something good or positive and doesnt become extreme, i will back it up 100%
Next door neighbour does marathons in 2 hours 15 mi utes. On tbe irish olympic team. The man is a machine . I run a bit myself and i really admire the pace and length of time he has to keep going. It is unreal the stamina and resilience thats needed to run for 26 miles in that time .
I know I need to exercise more and get in shape. I always find it funny when people who don't have a day job talk about how easy it is to exercise all the time and be in shape. Well yeah it is because you have all day to do it! I want to like running. I just can't get myself in that mindset yet. Even going for a walk with my wife is hard when I would totally rather stay in bed. I know it is good for me and us though.

Howdy sir cryptoandcoffee! lol..that is so funny, people are so funny. I have no idea why middle aged people would start running long distances, I don't think it's healthy.
