Daily Running: Day 15&16

(Fifty runs till may #15&16)

Running

I am trying to reduce # of posts and increase quality of the posts. So in the last post, I wrote I may stop doing daily posts, but focus more on writing in-depth posts.

Over the weekend, I did work on planning and drafting a few in-depth posts, but I couldn't let the weekend go without sharing about my runs with Steemit community. I ran both Saturday and Sunday, 9km and 12km, respectively. I will share my run on Sunday on this post.

So where I live, Seoul, Korea, is going through a very, very cold winter.
People say 'Seo-beria', likening harsh weather of 'Siberia' to that of Seoul these days.

It was my first time running with scarf around my neck, two gloves, two layers of pants, and two hats all at the same time.

I wasn't sure if running in this weather was a good idea...

At the lake, there was a lot of wind. I was glad with layers of things keeping me warm. There were some people at the lake, but not that many, because of cold weather.

Seokchon lake, almost empty

During the run, my body warmed up, and it felt great to run. I tried not to force anything. Just focused on the form, breathing, and being light with the ground.

There is an amusement park in the middle of the lake. To my disbelief, there were people taking rollercoasters in this weather.

Running details

  • Distance: 12km
  • Where: Seokchon Lake
  • Time: 55 min
  • Speed Range: 12~14km/h
  • Run type: medium
  • Incline: Lake

Daily Meditation: Day 16 & 17

  • Total Time: 30 minutes (15 min each day)

I meditated upon waking up on both days. On weekdays, I usually am in hurry to commute to work. But on the weekend, I get to sleep in a bit and be on my own schedule.

I have quite a few side projects going on, and weekend is the time for me to get them going. Sometimes this gives me a lot of pressure and immobilize me. It was great to start each day with meditation, re-tune my mind and focusing on what's important. In terms of quantity, I didn't get a lot done this weekend, but I spent quality time on organizing my thoughts and projects on Mindmaps.

Main mindmap

I try to draw everyday, but during the week, with late nights at the office, it gets difficult to do so. So I was happy to carve out half an hour and do some drawing. Drawing below is not done yet, and I am excited to see where it will end up.

pen&ink drawing I love doing... I try to not think much and let my unconsciousness do whatever it wants to do

Running each day, putting out thoughts and ideas onto mindmaps, and getting some drawing done... that was a good weekend!

Happy running and meditating!

Little background on why I run and meditate

Why running?
I got hooked to running in 2013. Running barefoot on grass, slowly, I learned how to be one with the movement. I loved running so much that I wanted to see how world's best runners live and train. So I went to Iten, Kenya in the summer of 2015. I read a sort of ebook with a Korean content start-up called 'PUBLY' about my 5 weeks in Iten (link). I want to share my experience with people who speak English as well, so I have started translating the prologue chapter. I hope to share my story with you soon. Until then, please check out some of the videos I took in Kenya. You will especially love this video of 10km race in Iten, which I filmed myself on the back of a motorbike. In my channel, there are many exercise and stretching videos that you will find beneficial as well. Follow me for more updates :)

Why meditating?
I did a 10-day Vipassana meditation retreat in 2011. There, I experienced a center of peace within myself. However, college, grad school, and real world slowly took me away from the practice. I am giving myself some social accountability by committing myself to meditate 15min before going to bed and upload a post about it on Steemit, along with my running post. I chose to do 15 minutes because it does not feel too long nor insignificant. It feels very manageable, but at the same time long enough to induce me some equanimity and mindfulness.

That must have been cold. I find I get warm even on cold days. You ran a good pace.

I'm not into meditation, but my friend @rebeccabe is. I know it works for some people

Yes, it was freezing. I remember running while snowing last year, and of course, that was much warmer. Thank you for introducing @rebeccabe, just visited her blog and love her writing. I envy you for staying warm during cold days :D

The day has only 23 hours and not 24, do you know why? Because one hour is booked always for running.
