Sunday run: Lucky 13

in #running7 years ago

It's exactly a week until I run my first half marathon and I'm not totally sure I feel ready. Today I did my longest run in a while, but it wasn't too bad. I was much quicker than my app thought I should be, but it was a comfortable pace. I may aim to go slightly slower for a race to ensure I last the distance. The bottom right part of my route is part of the race course, but then I took a speculative detour through the woods in hope that it would get me back home. It did. I love exploring the countryside around here. It's mostly man made, but still beautiful. Sorry, but I don't generally stop to take photos.

It's interesting that my best distances are on the later stages of the run.

I get some comments on my running posts with people worrying about my health. This is really nothing spectacular. I'm just an older guy trying to stay fit. Others run far quicker and if anything I think it's doing me good. I got out before it warms up today as I don't want it too hot. Current forecast for race day is slightly cooler, which suits me.

Here I am post-run about to have breakfast. A little sweaty, but otherwise fine. I'm finding my body recovers quicker from a long run these days.

I've been a lot more active since I changed jobs a year ago. That's partly because I don't drive to work, so I walk a lot more, and the work site is much bigger too. I've had more time for exercise and have been doing at least three sessions a week. This is what Google Fit shows for a year ago.

Last year

Quite a difference this year and you will see my weight is down. I checked this morning and I lost a bit more. That's less to carry around when running, but I should have more muscle mass too.

This year

The colours are for walking, running, cycling and other exercise (e.g. circuits), in that order.

I'm pretty confident of finishing the race and I don't care too much about the time. I do think I need new running shoes. It's a bit late in the day, but I may buy some this week anyway. I'll give them a good try before the race to ensure they are okay. My current ones were not absorbing too much and I could feel it at the end of my run.

As you have done running is just something you need to stick at and you will improve bit by bit. I find people tend to right us off as we get older and say running isn't possible, but of course it is.

You are becoming an athlete my friend! Specially these last months! Still I think you can get slimmer 😂😂
Regarding the half marathon, I think your strategy is good, try to reserve a little at the beginning and run by feelings. Enjoy the race.
Cheers!

Cheers. I just want to finish. Hoping for a good day

Its a hot day for running even at 8.44am today. @bingbabe was up at her usual 5.30am for her daily run, and brought me back some lovely sunrise pictures.

As I doubt she will ever deliver that first post, Ill upload them on a future article. She's also doing a half-marathon on the 20th, one week after yours. I hope its not as hot as today for either of you.

I can't get up that early. Not seen the sunrise in a while.

If you do a post for her you can use Steem Plus to allocate her the rewards.

I may end up doing a post for her, but I know whats she's like, and will expect it all the time.

Sounds like you're doing really well @steevc - apart from the running shoes. Get some today. You've not go much time to run them in before the big day!!!! 😍

Local running shop is not open today and I was busy yesterday. If they don't feel quite right I can still use my old ones.

Good point about your old shoes although not ideal. I sound like your mum! 😂

The local running shop probably wont' be open tomorrow either. 😢

I'll have a look on Tuesday in my lunch break

Wow, that is a vast improvement over last year! I'm sure it feels good to see such a difference (and feel it). :) No doubts you will finish the race distance. I agree, start out conservative in the beginning then just keep checking in with your body along the way. Good luck!

I think that more than any statistics your feeling that you recover much faster after long runs is saying that you are ready! Fingers crossed all goes well and you enjoy the race as much as possible. I just love the atmosphere on running races!

I've been struggling to sleep in past 7 so if I'm up early tomorrow I may attempt a short plod around the block before taking the dog for a walk. I should really combine the two but it's quite an effort when the dog stops every 10 yards; there's always something interesting to sniff.

My diet has been much better in recent times but still need to cut out a few beers. Baby steps :)

Is the half marathon an annual event?

Go for it! I'm trying to eat reasonably healthy, but I've not looked too far into what runners should eat. I expect I don't want something heavy the night before. It is annual, but I'll look at other events too.

You got this bro! Can't wait to see you post your results next weekend! I have faith you'll be able to complete the race and not caring about the time you finish in is a good way to approach your first experience with any given distance.

Just enjoy the experience and good luck to you!

From an even older guy than you, I agree it’s more about getting out there regularly and staying healthy than it is about time. My running goals these days are for consecutive weeks without an injury.

wow I just did like 4 km and thought did quite well hahahah

You have to start somewhere. I couldn't have done this a few years ago

Keep going, don't care about time, just be fit and have some fun!

13 km !! :o.....wow that's a good distance you covered. How long you have to run in the race?? Wish you best of luck, for upcoming event.

The race is 21km

Well, that's not bad for the preperation.Keep it up.
