With all three up on the main deck, Rank walked over to Ripper who was still watching the northern horizon, pipe in hand.

“We’re all up boss, we better make a run for it…” He said, as he eyed the approaching frigate which now looked twice as big as it did a few minutes before.

“No runnin’ now mate....” Ripper said flatly as he took another drag on his corn-cob pipe, “she’s comin’ in too fast. We’d never make it out of gun range in that dinghy.”
“What are you saying?!”
“I’m saying we’re blasted toast!” He replied calmly, his eyes filled with anger, “How many guns are still down below?”
“Plenty, but boss, we can’t fight a warship?!” Rank exclaimed in fear.
“Shut-up!” Ripper blasted as he back-handed him with his free hand,
Pow!
“We’re not fighting any warship idiot! Now gather up four muskets, powder and balls and start looking for a good hiding place!”
“Ok, ok Boss!” Rank replied sheepishly as he walked off, rubbing his face.
“Oh, and cut that dinghy free before they catch sight of it!”

Rank’s eyes got as big as hen’s eggs as he nodded slightly and took one last glance to the north. The frigate’s tall oak masts seem to grow taller by the second and her dark ominous silhouette sent shivers down his spine! Standing Officer-Boatswain Bleujay’s sharp eyes quickly detected something out of the ordinary…

“Commander Sairrr, there’s a dinghy driftin' sooth-eest jist a hunder yards from ‘La Serpent’…” She said as she handed the longscope to Commander Kerrislravenhill.

“Sure as th' day is lang, thaur is a dinghy gain adrift! Gang doon an' teel th' Keptin!” She said as she carefully eyed the French Corvette to the south.

“Aye Sairrr!"

Down below, the Captain was speaking quietly to Commander Galligan in the chartroom when Officer Bleujay jogged to the door and tapped lightly…

“Och aye officer?” The Captain said glancing up from the table.

“Excuse me Sairrrs…” Bleujay injected with a quick salute, “But we’ve spotted a lain dinghy driftin' loose jist sooth o’ th' French Corvette!”

“A loose Dinghy?” The captain said quickly as he scooted his chair back and stood up.

“Aye Sairrr, driftin' sooth, jist aff th' stern o’ ‘La Serpent’…”

“Something’s nae reit. 'Att dinghy was tethered oan th' main deck when we left 'er at anchur! Galligan, let’s git up-top an' tak' a swatch!”
“Aye Sairrr…”

As the three officers hustled down the main corridor of the ship, the tension seemed to build and Bleujay felt her heart race with every step!

‘What could all this mean?’ she wondered, ‘How could an empty dinghy get off the Corvette with no one on-board???'
