Thailand's BEST kept secret: Sala Kaew Ku, NongKhai Thailand
If you were to ask any travellers or normads which part of Thailand they have been to, you will probably hear touristy answers such as Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya and Chiang Mai. But if you would want to explore in a non-touristy area then I highly recommend NongKhai!
Nong Khai is located on the Northen side of Thailand and it boarders Laos with a friendship bridge connecting the two countries. You can easily cross over to Laos from NongKhai easily in under 1.5hours.
I started my day with a DELICIOUS and flavorful local dish.
The local omelet can only be found in NongKhai and it is highly recommended that you do! It has a sweet caramel taste with Asian spices which hits your taste buds. The texture of the omelet is unique as it is served with chunky pieces of meat. Adding chill sauce makes the dish taste perfect! A great way to energize yourself to start the day.
Thailand street food is not to be missed! Always helpful to have ample snacks available in your car as you set forth to your destination.
Today's destination would be the majestic Buddhist and Hindu temple called Sala Kaew Ku.
There is a serene calm feeling as you walk through the park. The architecture of all the sculptures are absolutely stunning. They are all two to three story high, towering over you as you walk past them. Most of the scriptures are written in their native language, it would be good if you have a translator along with you to help you better understand the stories they depict or the symbolism behind each sculpture. You can have a feel of walking through this amazing park via my youtube channel, MCO Travel Blog.
One of the highlight of the trip is definitely feeding the fishes and watching the feeding frenzy! You can buy loaves of bread at the entrance of the lake. It is a joy to watch feeding frenzy as you chill and cool off the afternoon under the hut by the edge of the lake.
As I travel around NongKhai, I hardly see any foreign tourist around and I love that the place is mainly untouched by the outside world. No attraction is overly touristy in this beautiful part of Thailand.
I will be creating separate post about other attractions in NongKhai, but here is a short preview of whats coming!
The Skywalk provides a gorgeous view overlooking the Mekong river that separates Laos and Thai boarders. The skywalk has a unique glass bottom that provides a unique perspective.
Another highlight of my NongKhai trip would definitely be the GORGEOUS 'Three Whale Rocks' (yay we love whales) and yes, its a humbling experience to walk on the back of these amazing natural formations.
Stay tuned guys! ;)
