Curating Steemit for Dummies.
For all you fine folks whom titles like this are addressed, I will be adding notes so you won’t feel left behind. Don’t feel bad. I’ve left a super special :) just for you at the end of each note. After all, you deserve it for making the “For Dummies” name what it is today. :)
Hello my fellow Steemians, today I am excited to bring to your shallow attention span the subject of content curation on Steemit.
Although it has different definitions elsewhere, on the Steemit platform curation is merely a fancy word for upvoting. :)
Curating content on Steemit, is a dutiful process indeed, and shouldn’t be taken lightly.
By content I primarily mean posts, but this term could also refer to comments. :)
The first rule of being a “grade A” content curator is: “Read the content.”
I know this sounds horrible, but go ahead and give it a try sometime. You may even accidentally learn something. :)
After reading the content take a moment to think upon the information you have just read. Try asking yourself some questions. Did I enjoy this? Have I learned anything from this? Did this make me laugh? Is this content worthy of the digital currency trail that it’s printed on?
If you can answer yes to one or more of these questions, you may just be looking at some content worthy of your creation.
I know that it is often difficult to ask yourself questions, as there is no one around to tell you what to think. Don’t worry though, it gets easier over time, perhaps you will even learn to think for yourself. :)
There is an old phrase, “never judge a book by its cover.” Here on Steemit a more fitting version would be, “never judge the worthiness of content, by the value of it’s upvotes.” The prevalence of bid bots and voting circles, make the dutiful curator's job much harder. Regardless of the quality of a post, you must always factor in the amount of reward pool pillaging that has resulted from the posters self promotion. Do they really deserve your curation if they have spent $200 SBD to make a $10 SBD profit? “Ouch Brah, lay off the reward pool depredation.”
I know how tempting it is to upvote a trending post worth $300+, in hopes you will get some curation reward. But... You won’t, the bid bots have beat you to it, and you my friend have fallen for the old “Steemit Bait n’ Take.” :)
There are rare exceptions to this for “extraordinarily important content.” So use wisdom when looking to find the exception.
Wisdom is a character trait one tends to learn by reading stuff and asking oneself meaningful questions. :)
Now there are many more qualities and attributes to becoming the best of the curators, but no one is asking you to be the best. That being said, if you choose to follow these simple steps, you just might find a much better Steemit in the future.
I tried my best to keep this short, I know that there is a meme over there that is calling your name. Thanks for the read. Peace :)
I would like to nominate @grumpycat and @the-resistance to submit posts for the @comedyopenmic competition. I don’t recall laughing on Steemit more than watching you two go back to back with the meme attacks.
👍👍👍- don't know what wisdom is....am a dummy. ok...back to my memes
back at ya @cornholio
Oh, memes is where the money's at. I'm pretty sure I'm the dummy for not memeing it up gangsta style. I could afford at least 2 double cheeseburgers by now if I had been.
How you been holding up? I can only hope some progress is being made on that book.
Not much progress with the book as of yet. :( Someday when things slow down a bit I'll at least finish the current chapter and reedit the old ones and do a full post, maybe as a sneak peak and see if people are interested then.
absolutely brilliant, comedic value "Wisdom is a character trait one tends to learn by reading stuff and asking oneself meaningful questions. :)" I love that. ha ha. An I've been so focused on writing, that I forgot to read. So thank you for this post. It's given me the knowledge I need to go read others post. Great writing, really fun to read. Kept my attention throughout. Excellent subject matter. Very informative. "I know that there is a meme over there that is calling your name". "You crack me up" heh heh :) Thanks for the post. I learned allot :)
You should really get involved in some of the communities. Steemit is very hard to get seen without getting to know others. I like your writing as well, you should really look into some of the discord channels.
To be honest it doesn't matter if you write the best of the best work here. If no one sees it, it's all for nothing. Get out there and make some friends, and in a bit of time you will have some people interested in your stuff.
You should check out @comedyopenmic, they run a comedy contest each week. It's fun and you can get to know some people as well. I wish you the best going forward. See you around.
Thanks man, I really appreciate you saying that. before you said it here, I didn't even know that communities on steemit existed. Thats really cool. An a odd way of utilizing the steemit platform. Which works, even though you would think it wouldn't. Also didn't think that the re would be discord channels, so will have to have a look. atm I'm trying to get to a point where I post at least 10 posts a day. But it's so hard. Made it a few days ago to 10. But normally post around 6 posts. But like you say. It's nion impossible to get work seen. So I am so going to take your advice and join some groups. Thank you so much the information is very much appreciated. Because it may have been months or even years before I figured that out for myself.
I would recommend cutting the posts down for each day to maybe a couple, or even just one good one. Take the time you would use fro writing the others and mosey with other Steemians. Read peoples stuff, write good comments, join some discord channels, and engage with the people.
At the end of the day people are interested not so much in content as they are with people. Interesting people with interesting content is a win win situation. It's the only way to really make headway here. Unless of course you want to go the paid vote route, which could work out, but often times just get's in the way of actually finding real followers(There are exceptions to this, if you got the crypto to throw at it, and you are super interesting.).
But pretty much get out and mingle, otherwise who are you really writing for? You gotta earn your audience, and on Steemit really the only long term way is through personal interactions.
If you got the slightest bit of a funny bone, I'd seriously look at @comedyopenmic. It's a fun little insane asylum of talent.
Stop making me laugh...it'll spoil my reputation...
So does that mean your post isn't worthy of a vote?
Nothing wrong with a bit of judge to contestant roasting, right?
I'm sorry @sisygoboom I forgot to mention, once you ask yourself these questions. Then you go ahead and answer them... you know... for yourself. :P
But If you really need someone to hold your hand through this process Mr. Judge....
The correct answers are:
Yes... Probably not... And Yep... :)
Thanks for the vote.
You got moved up just for saying "Mr. Judge"
Congratulations!
Thanks for helping me through the process, I'm all new to this and need someone to hold my hand at all times.
Moved up??? Oh nos....
Here I was thinking I was at the top.....
(bitter weeping)
W... WH... WHY Mr. Judge, did y.. you... have to Sha... Shatter my dreams???
