Steem Basic Income
Have you heard of @SteemBasicIncome? It's a 'social experiment' to give a basic income to Steemit users. All you have to do is to nominate you think someone who deserves extra votes by sending 1 Steem to that account with the users name, including the @. Then they get a vote on each of their posts. The bonus is that you get one too! And this is for life, or at least as they can keep running it. If you get or create multiple nominations then the vote you get goes up. It may only be a few cents each week, but it's an extra incentive to keep posting and those cents could be worth a lot more later on.
I've already got about 30 'shares', but I've built up some Steem and am adding a few more. It may take a day or two for them to kick in as they are manually assessed. Please don't ask me to do this for you as I will make my own judgement on who deserves it.

Manna
mannabaseYou may see I mentioned Manna as well. This is another form of basic income using their own cryptocurrency. I came across it in the early days of Steemit through some posts by @lloyddavis who was giving to people who attended his events. It was previously called Grantcoin. To get it all you have to do is register at . Once your account is approved you will receive some Manna each week. It may just be a few cents, but that could build over the years. You earn more if you get referrals, which is what I'm doing here. Of course you should follow @mannacurrency on Steemit to learn more about what they do.
You can see I have quite a bit thanks to getting in early. I propose to give some away. I was trying to think of how to do this, but what I'll do is to give 100 Manna to each of the first 10 people to put their wallet address in a comment here from Monday if I can get to 40 referrals by next Saturday. I'm making an assumption that you can get approved in a couple of days, but if you can't then let me know. Of course people could just put their current addresses, but if I don't get the referrals they get nothing. This is a little experiment and I may have to adjust the parameters if it doesn't work out.
Of course I like getting paid for using Steemit, but I also see it as a way to help others.

Steembasicincome is a really cool program! I'm up to 100 shares, about 3/4s of which I bought myself. I recently did a share trade with a steemian that I've been following and supporting for quite a few months now. I've given 10 shares to several people who I thought should have more support than they were getting. I'm sure that I could have powered up all that steem, but I think this was a better use of it, it helps other steemians as well as myself.
Hopefully people haven't forgotten by Monday. Steemit is a fast paced blog and yesterdays news can quickly disappear into obscurity.
We shall see. It's an experiment. I've had one person say they are having issues with verifying their account. That stuff needs to be seamless really.
Very nice. There is more and more talk about a universal basic income as a concept these days.
I think these types of initiatives are a good way of teasing out what will work and what won't.

You are right about using the platform to help others. I've used mostly contests to give away 1000's of Steem and SBD in prizes. Another good way is through Steemgigs where I've transferred 100's to others for different gigs.
I think there's a lack of appreciation of all the good stuff that goes on here. We need to promote that more. There are some good charities on here we can donate to. From the start I saw Steem as a way to do good. We need to hang onto that vision.
I've completely lost touch with both my Steem Basic Income and Manna Accounts @steevc. That's another thing to add to my to do list - check those.

I've tried (all morning) to sign up to Manna. The signup process is very, very buggy. I'm stuck on getting my phone number verified. At first it was saying I hadn't started the signup process (even though I'm in the middle of it) and now can't get back to the phone number screen to try again. So I'm stuck halfway through.
