SCAM ALERT: Some Uber drivers recruiting for MLM/pyramid schemes!

Evidently there are now drivers for Uber, a popular side hustle, who have yet another side hustle going on: Recruiting people into MLMs. Twice in the same week, users on Reddit reported being talked up by their Uber drivers about an "amazing opportunity to retire in their 20s".

When asked if it was Amway, the driver became quiet, then protested that it's not Amway. "It's like Amway" he reportedly said, "but different". The second encounter involved Younique, a well known cosmetics MLM. The driver had a woman with him, possibly his girlfriend.

The rider, a woman as well, was badgered about buying makeup and asked whether she had any female relatives who might be interested in the product. Besides the fact that it's against Uber policy to have anybody in the car besides the driver and the rider, pitching MLM products or membership to a captive audience like that is filthy.

Perhaps they're driven to this by the low wages Uber pays? Or by the opportunity to meet loads of people in one night, one after the next, for durations that are just about perfect for the MLM recruitment spiel. And of course, you can't get away as you're in a moving vehicle.

Be aware and be wary. Here's an article I wrote about the defining properties of pyramid schemes and the MLM variation on them that you can use to identify if what someone is trying to recruit you into falls into that category.

Stay Cozy!

This is quite amusing: you get a ride and an MLM pitch in one go! LOL

Uber drivers aren't making today what they used to, so I guess they're now trying to make some cash on the side to make ends meet. It's definitely shady behavior, but I understand it.

@alexbeyman,
Yeah MLM is one of the biggest scam! This might drop the popularity of Uber! In my country there are a lot of MLM and Pyramid schemes running on too!

Cheers~

Be sure to prevent your loved ones from falling for MLMs by sending them my article about how to identify them.

Ok Thats alarming info that you provided. Retiring in 20s oh man I won't believe ... Ok I'll read your article. Good sharing

these types of frauds are common everywhere.some people are fed up with scammers and we are fed up with spammers

They just shut down Uber in my country yesterday after a big lawsuit (a taxi company sued them). To be honest I do not know how to react to that I often hear different stories (Yes, I use, or now better out used, Uber) form drivers some tell me they need to work a shitton of hours to get a decent loan to manage their live and others tell me it's a goldmine. To be honest the main reason why I use Uber is the transparency. I often got cheated by taxi drivers taking a longer route or what not and that can not happen driving with Uber and of course it's pretty convenient to order a Uber paying by credit card after a long night out with no money in the pockets after the club. Fortunately the weather starts to get better here and spring finally arrived (love to walk home in morning when the sun comes out after a long night out).

To that scheme promotion: Even if the wages are low, that should not be an excuse to rip off other people. Since only a few reports I would count this to the universal rule: There is an bad apple everywhere.

Regarding this topic: there is another great feature in Uber: the rating. I think eventually people acting like that will get low star ratings and at one point Uber won't let them drive anymore.

Do not get me wrong I'm in no way defending or promoting Uber. Actually I thought about the "Uber problem" a lot and came to my personal conclusion it's OK for me to use it from time to time. Like I said I basically only use it to get home after a long night out when there is no other possibility than a one or two hour ride with the nightline.

On the other side (forget about Uber now just think about the scheme side): I really do not get how people can still fall for them schemes hard. In this time you need to have some dort of critical thinking. Just think about it you drive home in the evening after a drink with your friends and a complete stranger comes up to you and starts talking about how to get rich (this really should be the first red flag), how the fu** can anybody without even researching (and literally every time you really research those schemes you will recognized it's a scheme in no time) invest money in that. Just believing some random guy, and often using money they really need to live, pay rent, food and stuff. We do see the same in Crypto though just to many people falling for obvious scams. That's why I always say:

**Don't be a sheep! Develop critical thinking on your own!

PS: Sorry, got a little long, just poured out of me. And sorry for my english just wrote out of my head with no double checking. Hope you get what I mean.

Good insights. You're a smart cookie. Don't worry about your english, I don't even speak any other languages.

I have long no longer believe in MLM. Most of MLM is a ponzy scheme. But still they have many followers. We must continue to educate people in general not to fall into the scheme of deception.

More and more days just a lot of ways people recruit members to enter into MLM. And these MLM people may have no more shame to promote their commodities. Stay alert. Thank you for this very valuable information @alexbeyman.

All these scams going on, man it's hard nowadays to trust people. And now the uber drivers, what are we going to do now

Or by the opportunity to meet loads of people in one night, one after the next, for durations that are just about perfect for the MLM recruitment spiel. And of course, you can't get away as you're in a moving vehicle

This seems to be more like it. I have also had an experience, but i was too engrossed in steemit to listen at the time, he went on talking for a couple of minutes then stopped when he noticed my attention but i heard everything, they sound the same lol. I willl check that link now, be aware and weary

Uber is a great service provided drivers are being checked regularly.

I live in NY, there are more than anough Uber drivers. I don’t use Uber at all, however some of my friends do. I think I should ask them if they heard anything about this scam or pyramid scam. These pyramids are all over, there will always be scammers and people getting scammed. We just have to be cautious. Thanks for this alert 🚨!

Well that way they think they do 2 part time jobs at the same time.. kill two stones with one bird (or was it the other way around..kill one bird with two stones? ). That's why their rating wouldn't stay very high for long..

scamming is still okay if compared with the situation over here
uber drivers are known for misbehaving with women here

Not even surprised. Damn scammers are in every corner.
Now I should be very careful when I call an Uber.

Should punch fraudsters right in the face!
Works everytime!

Things like this should be addressed by Uber. Otherwise, their reputation may fall with the number of reports of customer discomfort. Hopefully they continue to function as online transport, without any other activities in it. After all, the customer is king.

wow, unfair member recruitment techniques. Why always like this? How MLM can get out of negative and manipulative stigma.

It can't. It deserves the stigma. MLM is not a valid business model, it is inherently exploitative.

Scams are everywhere.
We should stay vigilant

You are right
But this is true the Uber is very good and helpful for us

this is amazing, thanks for the information

Well these things tend to happen only that there's no one to expose them, now these uber drivers seems to be really looking for extra way to make money clearly I won't fall for this really.

great informations for scam

Well Uber should make a move .The reputation is indeed at stake !

hello bro alex. I have never used uber. that there are grab and gojek. no problem. why with uber ?. need to be careful

That sucks!!! If that happened to me, the first thing i would do, would be to report to Uber, ask for my money back and demand that driver has some kind of penalty. I really hate these things even from friends that try to convince me to enter MLM and that i will get rich!
