You can even use sunflowers to clean up toxic heavy metal contaminants and poisonous chemicals in the soil. They are being used to clean up contaminated soil in urban areas and even used to draw out radioactivity around Fukushima, Japan.
wow didn't know that! thank you so much! we have sunflowers that come up each year either from the heads last year (that we always let go to the birds, but you're encouraging me otherwise!!) or from the chicken tractor sunnies that the birds don't eat. an amazing plant that typifies summer!

Isn't that so cool about sunflowers. It's not just an eye candy, it is also food and useful for cleaning up contaminated soil.
There are quite a lot of things we grow but never think about harvesting for food. I just like to experiment and learn all the things we can eat if things get bad. You guys have taught me a lot about food that's growing wild. Knowledge is power! You guys are awesome. Keep sharing what you have learned.
