Scientists have successfully wiped out a population of mosquitoes in a lab by altering mosquito DNA. Sounds great! Mosquitoes carry all kinds of diseases. However, I can't help but wonder about the inevitable unintended consequences of eliminating an entire species of something even a mosquito. There's really no way of knowing what, if any, ill effects something like this could have if it advances further than a lab. I'm no scientist, but if the species of mosquitoes that carry malaria were eliminated the malaria parasite will either evolve or die. My bet's on evolution.
