Rational thought is highly overrated. Most mistakes we make are with the rational part of our mind, and one of the biggest is to use a small sample size to generalize. When I was in grad school it was stressed that we needed a sample size of at least 20 to hope to generalize. Now Khaneman and Tversky have proven that sample size should be several hundred.
