VAMPIRE SYNDROME: DISEASE OF THE LIGHT

in #science7 years ago

Have you ever noticed why Caliban in the movie “Logan” is afraid to go out at day and lives in a small room only?? And when tortured to go out, his skin burns out all of a sudden !! Well here’s the answer- he is shown to have an interesting skin condition called as “XERODERMA PIGMENTOSUM”, also known as “VAMPIRE SYNDROME”.

What is Xeroderma Pigmentosum??
It is a rare autosomal recessive disorder which occurs in 1 out of 1 million people in the world.
When we are exposed to sunlight, the UV radiations damage our cells and its DNA. These damaged DNAs are repaired by Nucleotide Excision Repair Enzymes (like endonucleases ,DNA polymerase and Ligases). But in this disease, there is mutation of these enzymes and our DNA cannot be repaired and thus our skin burns.

Symptoms
The people with this condition have
Severe sunburn
Blistering
Spider veins
Scaly skin
Dry skin
Rough surfaced outgrowths (called solar keratoses)
Skin cancers in extreme conditions can be seen.

Treatment
It cant be cured but some protective measures can be applied.
They should be completely shielded from sunlight.
Use protective clothing
Apply sunscreen
Cryotherapy or fluorouracil can be used for keratosis.

Only less than 40% people suffering from this disease survive beyond the age of 20 years.

So turns out that the vampire picture I kept at the front was just for amusement and this disease has nothing to do with blood sucking and all those supernatural powers we think vampires possess huh !!
Well this is it for today. Will surely bring out more amazing stuffs in upcoming posts.Hope u like it and do upvote for more support.
