A Great Example of How Water Contains Heat For the Long Haul - January 20th 2018

I have respect for Mother Earth and the power of her elements, water being one of them of course.

Most people know the chemistry behind the water molecule, two Hydrogen and one Oxygen atom covalently bonded in a manner that gives the molecule a natural polarity, forming a bent V-shape with the top ends as Hydrogen(+) and the bottom end as Oxygen(-).

This polarity is what gives the water molecule its great solvent abilities but it is what occurs between water molecules when they are enumerated. When the Hydrogen ends of a water molecule attract the Oxygen end of another water molecule, the weak attraction known as Hydrogen bonding occurs! It may be a weak attraction in relation to the covalent bonds within each molecule itself, but it is this additional attraction of the Hydrogen bonding between each water molecule that gives water its high heat capacity. And having a high heat capacity is the reason for this lake still being frozen.

After several days of 45+F temperatures, reaching 55F today... and why it takes a bit longer to first freeze in early winter.

This concept can be applied on a bigger scale, such as the Gulf Stream Current.. and how much warm water is brought from the Gulf of Mexico up the east coast, and drives weather patterns for a large portion of the states!
