Dear steemians. How are you today? I hope you are good. Today I want to share about Why is Spring in Baby Swing Constructed Parallelly?
Baby swing is a swing that Mom uses to make her baby sleep soundly. A mother prefers to use a baby swing when her baby wants to sleep. This is because the baby is very easy to sleep if using a baby swing. The slow back and forth movement makes the baby sleep faster. The baby is happy if swung. Most likely because the baby feels like in the womb of his mother who swung as she walked.
Many models of the baby swing made by human creations. Generally the baby swing uses several springs that are arranged in parallel. There is also a swing that uses only one spring. The use of springs in a swing is meant to allow the baby to move back and forth as the spring is vibrated. Do you know why springs on baby swings are arranged in parallel?
To answer the above questions, the author tries to discuss it based on the science of physics. In physics the motion of alternating in periodic intervals is called vibration. When the spring is deviated then the spring will move back and forth in a periodic time interval. Thus mean the spring to vibrate. But the answer to the above question can be explained using the following Hooke law.
A model of a common physical system for which the force varies with position is shown in Figure below. A block on a horizontal, frictionless surface is connected to a spring. If the spring is either stretched or compressed a small distance from its unstretched (equilibrium) configuration, it exerts on the block a force that can be expressed as :
F = -kx
Where x is the position of the block relative to its equilibrium (x = 0) position and kis a positive constant called the force constant or the spring constant of the spring. In other words, the force required to stretch or compress a spring is proportional to the amount of stretch or compression x. This force law for springs is known as Hooke’s law. Source
Based on the above theory, then for some springs that are arranged in parallel can be derived the following mathematical equations. Consider the spring image that is paralleled in the following baby swing.
If the spring is considered identic so that it has the same spring constant k, then when the baby is hung on the swing, then the spring is experiencing the same length increase that we give x. But the total force experienced by the spring is the sum of the forces experienced by each spring. The mathematical decrease is as follows.
F = F1 + F2 + F3 +F4 +F5 + F6
Because F = - k. x, then:
kt = k1 + k2 + k3 + k4 + k5 + k6 + k7
kt is k total.
Because each spring constants equal,
kt = 7k
In parallel, spherical circles are generated larger spring constants. So the purpose of the spring on the baby swing is arranged in parallel is to produce a larger total spring constant so that it can offset the baby's weight. Baby swings can also use single springs with larger constants and can offset the baby's weight. For example above it can be replaced with one spring which value of spring constant of 7k.
