Apple Publishes Its First Research Paper On Artificial Intelligence

in #science8 years ago (edited)

We are still several months away from the new iPhone Apple announcement and many have started to speculate about what the next model might look like. Including some suggestions that we could see a flip-phone model in the future, and at least 3 new models that might be released in 2017.

Apple just recently released its first AI research paper, Learning from Simulated and Unsupervised Images Through Adversarial Training, published in a paper associated with the Cornell University Library. Their paper proposes a technique to be used for improving artificial intelligence, specifically on improving a computer's ability to be able to recognize various stimuli. They call the method: Simulated+Unsupervised (S+U) learning.

Their suggestion centers around using digital images that have data incorporated within them, to help computers to be able to “see,” rather than using real-world objects that the machine would need to interpret. There are also suggestions about modifying algorithms to also improve a specific feature.

It might come off as a bit surprising to some people that Apple took this long to publish any sort of research paper surrounding the world of artificial intelligence, and indeed many scientists will be happy that they finally got around to doing it. Traditionally, Apple has operated in a non-transparent fashion, striving for secrecy by previously banning their researchers from sharing any findings with the market.

Apple is one of the bigger players in the artificial intelligence space today, so it is fitting that the corporation would seek to release a paper on their findings in this field of research.

Apple is a good company to boycott if you are progressive.

Whats the betting Apple AI will only recognise stimuli from other Apple products?

I skimmed the actual research paper; seems like a good idea to solve the AI training issue. The paper is here, in PDF format: https://arxiv.org/pdf/1612.07828v1.pdf
