This is set apart from the main orion nebula because it has its own star sculpting it and is going against the grain of the much larger orion nebula.
The dark wall is the dividing line between it and the larger Orion nebula.

@gavvet if you ever get the chance you should attend a "star party" and look through a large telescope at M42 and M43. It's really something to behold (whereas a lot of celestial objects that look spectacular in photographs are often disappointing or even invisible by direct vision).
