A recent paper claims that Earhart's remains were actually found nearly 80 years ago, but that they were miss identified as the remains of a man. The bones were found on a small, uninhabited Atoll known as Nikumaroro Island, in the South Pacific. Although Anthropologist are all buzzing around these new findings, I'm not 100% convinced quite yet.
There are also stories of a shipwreck that occurred on the same island in 1929. A crew of over 30 men found themselves on Nikumaroro Island. Those crew members that were deceased, were buried on the island. Therefore it is very possible that the bones they found belonged shipwrecked crew members that had passed away.
