RE: Debunk-Tuesday – The Myth of Overpopulation

in #science7 years ago (edited)

I was eager to read it because I so much hope that overpopulation is a myth.Hey, @egotheist. You chose a very interesting topic, given the discussion that followed :)

how is this population going to live - like an average American, an average European or an average say Haitian?Although you pointed out some positive statistics about food and clean water distribution, I must agree with @alexs1320 that the problem is more about the quality of life. Earth could hold on another doubling or tripling in population, but the question is

I believe that quality education is key in the process of managing population growth and resource distribution. I agree with @gentleshaid that resource distribution is a political matter, but well-educated people could vote more wisely and navigate better their country government and politics. I am saying this with great sadness as good and quality education has actually declined in my country which clearly results in a more easily manipulated society and a populist government. Looking at the political movements and events in Europe and USA (yes, Brexit and Trump again) makes me wonder if there is some tendency in it? Or maybe (high) education and critical thinking are two different things?! Anyway, quality education, populism, and critical thinking are other broad subjects which are worth discussing some other time :)

The discussion below has mixed between discussing overpopulation and migration. I won't go any further into migration and integration (I don't want to flood the discussion section with something offtopic) as you will probably write a post about it. I will just mention that I come from a country which has a huge issue with integrating gypsy minority. Personally, I have spent the last 5 years working for an NGO for educating this minority and I would like to oppose @alexs1320 that the problem with this particular minority is not that "they don't want to integrate but to procreate" but is rather about bad politics and corruption. Believe me, no one wants to live the way this minority lives. If the invested money for "integration" was actually working toward real integration, the problem would have been solved already. Again, it's all about good politics.

As I said, I won't go any further. I am looking forward to your next post. Cheers!
