Nicotine is an addictive substance very harmful to health. People with nicotine addiction or nicotine addiction (dependent on nicotine) feel the compulsive need to consume it. This addiction takes place mainly through the tobacco of the cigarettes (for that reason, the addiction to the nicotine also denominates addiction to the tobacco).

Nicotine addiction is a worldwide phenomenon: according to the Spanish Association Against Cancer, 29% of Spanish people smoke and between 60 and 70% of them are addicted to nicotine. Nicotine addiction is harmful to health although its causes do not only reside in nicotine but in the other toxic substances contained in cigarette smoke. Some of the negative effects of smoking are the following:

1-Arteriosclerosis (hardening and calcification of the arteries).

2-Blood flow disorders.

3-Thrombosis (formation of venous or arterial thrombi due to blood coagulation disorders).

4-Myocardial infarction.

5-Alteration in the arterial diameter due to vasoconstriction in general and in the legs (due to tobacco) causes peripheral vascular insufficiency (Buerger's syndrome). It can affect the upper limbs as well.

6-Erectile dysfunction.

7-COPD, such as chronic bronchitis.

8-Lung cancer (bronchial carcinoma).

According to the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM), in Spain, about 55,000 people die each year from cancer, cardiovascular diseases and lung diseases associated with tobacco use. Precisely, smoking is considered the main avoidable cause of cancer, and there are many methods that help the smoker to effectively combat their addiction to nicotine. Despite this, the habit of smoking continues to be widespread and its industry, very consolidated.
