And flies only normally live for 2-3 days right?

People seem to think that, but it depends on the fly. The average housefly can live (with food) for up to 30 days. While a drosophila like used in this study (a fruit fly) can live for up to 50-60 days.

Here they showed with the protein overexpression that some flies were living up to 80 days, a pretty sizable 33% extension on their previous lifespans!
