So, today I found myself in a certain part of YouTube-police videos. I was binge-watching video after video of bodycam footage in which different officers were dealing with non compliant suspects who were resisting arrest. In most of these videos, suspects would end up being tasered, and in some cases, with little effect. People often think an ineffective tasering is a result of the suspect being under the influence of drugs or perhaps simply so enraged that the volts are negated. However, you'll find that it has more to do with the officer using the taser and the distance from which it is deployed.
Electricity flows from positive to negative. In order for you to be shocked in any scenario with adequate voltage, you have to be in contact with both positive and negative conductors. When this happens, you become part of the circuit and the electricity uses you as a bridge to get from positive to negative. This is why tasers have two probes, and both of them have to pierce you in order for you to feel anything.
Observe the following two examples of tasers being ineffective, one thing they both have in common is that they're used at very close ranges.
Taser probes, much like shotgun shells, have a spread when they are fired. This means, the closer you are to someone when you taser them, the closer the probes will land to each other on the person's body. Closer probes mean a shorter path must be traversed on the suspect's body to bridge the current from the positive probe to the negative one. This results in less of the person's body being subjected to shock and a reduced chance of disabling them. An effective spread has the probes landing at least one foot apart and ideally one above and one below the waist.
That is our lesson on tasers todays boys and girls. Hope you learned something. Merry Christmas and STEEM ON!
