Some researchers suggest that this is the sign that there was life on Mars. In a December 2017 photo made by Curiosity, you can see what looks like trace fossils.
One of the researchers who speculate that these are trace fossils is Barry DiGregorio from the Buckingham Center for Astrobiology.
“They look remarkably similar to Ordovician trace fossils I have studied and photographed here on Earth,” wordings quoted by the website Space.com.
MSL Project Scientist Ashwin R. Vasavada of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California said that the structures are very small, probably one to two millimeters wide and five millimeters long.Scientists are so intrigued by this finding that they have decided to return Curiosity.
Exclude
The scientists do not exclude that this is about trace fossils. But……”we certainly won’t jump to that as our first interpretation,” Vasavada said.
Bioturbation
Geologist Pascal Lee of the SETI Institute first thought was bioturbation a process by which sediment is worked and moved by organisms.
As an example, Lee mentions holes made by worms in the ground. These holes are filled with sediment, fossilize and are exposed to erosion, making them look like tubular structures.
Mystery
Although he does not claim that the photos are proof of bioturbation on Mars, Lee thinks that all of this is very intriguing and he hopes that Curiosity will spend more time in the area get to the bottom of this mysterious finding.
