RE: Understanding Research - X kills Cancer

in #science7 years ago

With all the brilliant minds walking the planet, it seems to me if they really wanted to cure cancer, they would have already. So, every now and then, they pop out a new drug or treatment that "may" work, just to keep up appearances. Just an opinion...

Sort:

You should visit a conference with focus on cancer where top-notch scientists present their research. You would be confirmed in your statement that there are brilliant minds out there, but you would also have to acknowledge that the reality of the biology underlying (advanced) cancer is immensely complex and seemingly resistant to various really smart approaches.

Maybe. Then again, cancer is a complex thing, there doesn't exist only just one. And for many cancers there are successful treatments. My mom herself survived one and she feels great now.

Medical research is complicated, expensive and takes time. Until a single drug is approved 10 years can pass (from first experiment to being sold commercially).

I'm not denying that there is a good portion of corruption in the pharmaceutical industry but as someone aspiring to enter medical research myself I just can't believe that everything is already cured and just held back.

Thank you for your opinion, it's always important to talk about this. And I really understand your point of view, it can really feel like this sometimes.

Many of those brilliant minds descend into alcoholism and suicide. The smarter you are, the harder it gets to find others that can keep up with you mentally.

How many minds do we lose in the sea of our own mediocrity?
