THE KIDNEYS

The kidney perform a number of functions among which are:-

  • OSMOREGULATION
This is defined as the process whereby an animal regulate the balance between water and sait in it body fluid. The body does not have room for excess or shortage of water or salt, hence the need of always maintain their level in the body fluid.

  • OSMOREGULATION IN MAN

The kidney carries out osmoregulation in man. When the osmotic concentration of blood is higher than that of the cell content by means of sugar, minerals sailt, amino acids and other plasma solutes, the kidney extract these subtances from the blood or body cells and absord more water. When these subtances are present in small amount in the blood, it carries higher osmotics pressure in the body cells thus decreasing the osmotic concentration of the blood and kidney extract more water than usals. By the action of Anti-Diuretic hormone (ADH), more concentration urine is produced thus keeping the osmotic concentration of blood and cells fairly constant. Osmoregulation
