I think it goes beyond just population and believe that culture is changing for the worse and people are being desensitized by media. If you look at China, many people in those large cities have a "I don't want to get involved" type of attitude and that's why you can see a child being run over or a women getting stabbed to death in broad daylight with lots of people around. In the west you also see people opting to record for social media likes rather than helping someone in need.
