Corn is a plant of prime importance in human and animal food.
Paradoxically this is a culture neglected by amateur gardeners, we think twice about the large number of old varieties available. In addition, corn is an ideal companion for many vegetable plants.
Climate: Corn likes temperate or warm climates.
Exposure: Sunny and sheltered.
Soil: Fresh, fertile, light and humiferous.
Sowing: In place, from April to June, in pockets of 3 to 4 seeds.
Spacing: 40 cm on the row and 70 cm between rows.
Flowering: from July to the end of September.
Harvest: Sweet corn is harvested 3 months after sowing. The varieties to be popped are harvested 4 to 5 months after sowing.
Good marriages: Corn is a good companion, it can be combined with squash, potatoes, peas, cucumbers, beans, lettuce and beans.
Fertilization: Corn appreciates fertilizer in late autumn or early spring. Prefer a well degraded compost or a natural fertilizer. On the other hand, fresh manures must be avoided.
Maintenance: Surface hoeing and hoeing only, due to its relatively shallow root system. As such, it is good to bump the corn feet when they reach 15 to 20 cm high, and to repeat the operation when they are 40 cm. So better anchored in the ground, the feet of maize will see their rooting strengthened and their resistance to the wind increased.
