More Effective Where, Handwashing with Hot or Cold Water?

Hand washing is the most basic and simple way to keep your body healthy. But only a few people do it the right way, or even not as often as it should be. Some people think that hand washing with water is enough. Is it true? Should hot water or cold water be enough?

1. Hand washing with hot water alone can eliminate 40 percent of harmful microbes

Meanwhile, based on discussions with some experts in Quora, washing hands with soap and using hot water can remove 95-100 percent of harmful microbes. However, based on the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) study, should also consider the convenience of the hand when receiving hot water. So the FDA limits the most effective water temperature to wash the safe hands is 40 ° C. That's the water temperature that can kill 40 percent of microbes (alone) in the hands, if only using water. According to the FDA, this is not effective enough.

2. However if based on the comfort of your hands, it turns out the temperature of hot or cold water there is no significant difference in cleaning germs and bacteria in your hands

the water temperature will not differ significantly if accompanied by the use of hand washing soap. To note also, regular soap and anti-bacterial soap does not bring significant differences as well. This conclusion is derived from hand washing experiments using three different water temperatures: 16 ° C, 26 ° C and 38 ° C. If using only water, of course the effectiveness of bacteria eradication increases with the higher water temperatures. But if using soap, not enough effect.

3. Soap or antiseptics are still needed to clean hands from harmful microbes

washing with water alone almost produces no detergent or antiseptic effect. Foamed water has a detergent effect that is more able to clean the dirt (from stains to oil) in the hands. Hot water has a better antiseptic effect than cold water. While soap or antiseptic also alters the pH balance in the skin, which can help kill microbes.

4. Hand wash time there is minimal, to maximize in getting rid of all risky microbes

research over the duration of effectiveness of hand washing is an average of 25 seconds. Ordinary people are often trained to wash hands for at least 20 seconds, whereas most doctors usually require minimal handwashing for 30 seconds. So, effective hand washing is to use soap with warm water for at least 25 seconds.

Always remember to wash your hands before and after the move, to keep your health awake, remembering you can not really control when your hand touches your face (mouth, nose, eyes). Especially wash your hands before and after meals.
