Fun with TEM guts

in #science • 5 years ago

Over 10 years jerking around these things and proud to say I have never damaged a pole piece, seen a few wrecked in the field tho 🤣😂. Usually dropped by a poorly trained FSE. Pole piece is the shiny guy in the middle of first pic. Second pic is where it belongs, held in by the wide gold plated nut in first pic. Sure enough, when I pulled C1 app (on the rod over gold nut) a piece of indium fell out, which is what I was hoping because there was a crappy beam obstruction. Sometimes when making the seal above some indium smooshes out of guide ring and falls down liner tube. Annoying, but sometimes unavoidable.

Originally this was an IG post I would have used share2steem for, but it seems the Zuckerfuck blocked it. Dudes got all the money in the damn world and wont let a handful of scrubs, artists, influencers and others make a little bit of beer money on the side. Facebork sucks!!!!

What's all that gunk in the middle of the hole in the second picture?

Leftover Indium Seal, which I later removed.

On that note, why do they use indium seals to begin with, rather than usual copper gaskets for high vacuum?

I think that because the liner tube is pretty thin, because the bore through the lenses is pretty small. The pressure required to make a copper seal would cause the liner tube to buckle.
